Poona, currently called Pune, in the State of Maharashtra, is referred to as the “Oxford and Cambridge of India” as the city houses nearly 30 plus constituent and affiliated colleges of the University of Pune. The City also known as the “Queen of the Deccan,” due to its cultural heritage associated with the Marathas. Pune ranked number one in India in the ease of living ranking index in Sixties and Seventies.
Due to Pune’s excellent educational opportunities the affluent Malayalees in late fifties and early sixties sought admissions in the best academic and technical colleges and on their graduation joined while-collar jobs in Pune, Ahmednagar, Nashik and Mumbai. The exodus from Kerala picked up speed during late sixties and seventies when young job seekers who possessed adequate education, willing to work hard and excelled in their chosen fields outside Kerala. Such opportunities gave stimulus to job seekers as well as the companies looking for right kind of candidates benefited started settling in and around Pune and other cities. As usual, Malayalee youngsters looking for green pastures beyond Valayar came and joined in different kinds of jobs - from peon to higher cadres as also established different kinds of self employments, starting from tyre related jobs - canteens, tea shops and snack centres in established companies and road junctions have resulted substantial number of Malayalees working and staying in various districts of Maharashtra like Mumbai, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Pune which boast a Malayalee footprint in millions; over four-five lakh in Pune itself.
Way back on 21 st September 1990, (Kanni 5 th of the Malayalam Calendar), the Maha Samadhi day of Bhagwan Sree Narayana Guru, a few devotees of Gurudevan assembled at the residence of Shri K.N. Sasidharan at Akurdi, to offer prayers and observe rituals of the Maha Samadhi day. After the rituals they initiated a discussion to form an association in Pune to spread the principles of Gurudev.
As a follow-up of this decision, these devotees along with a few more like- minded people met at the residence of Shri Vimal Kumar in Akurdi and firmed up the idea of forming a Samiti in Pune. During their discussions they unanimously resolved and proposed the title “Sree Narayana Guru Samiti, Pune” and nominated Shri M.A. Govindan as the Founder President, Shri Balaraman K Panicker (now deceased) as General Secretary, Shri G Sukumaran as Vice President and Shri M Vasudevan (now deceased) as Treasurer. The other Founder Committee members were Shri KN Sasidharan, Shri CD Prabhakaran, Dr C.V. Sarasappan (now deceased) and Shri Vimal Kumar.
The Articles and Memorandum of Association were drafted, discussed, approved and filed with the Office of the Charity Commissioner, Pune was approved under Societies Registration Act 1860 and Bombay Public Trust act 1950 vide Registration No Mah/5913/Pune dated 4 th July 1991 & F 7002 (Pune) dated 21 st August 1991 respectively; thus officially established the Samiti in Pune. As per the Objects the Membership is given to any person, above the age of 18 years and has an unblemished record who complies with the admission process is admitted to the Samiti irrespective of caste, creed, religion, region or language. From a humble beginning in 1991, the Samiti has grown into the largest organization in Pune with over 1200 plus Members (read as Families) spread over 14 Area Units within Pune District, has its own nearly 1000 sqft office in Central Pimpri, an English Medium School in Sai Nagar, Mamurdi, Dehu Road catered to the children from lower echelon of the Society, Gurudeva Kshetram in Mamurdi, a Tri-masika as the mouth-piece of the Samiti and a Marriage Bureau both operating out of Central Office, Pimpri .
